2007 Water: WET Architect: Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Landscape Architect: SWA Group Located in the city’s historic center, Beijing Finance Street is the new center of the West District. The development includes housing, hotel, office, retail and cultural facilities. At the heart of BFS is the project’s central park and plaza. A series of water bands traverse the plaza. Each band is composed of hundreds of vertical water jets. The design intends to be flexible and multi purpose. Water and light emit from openings in the plaza surface. The fountain can be inactive and the area dry, allowing for performances and large gatherings. When active the fountain is choreographed to create an array of kinetic patterns and sequences that range in height from one to twenty meters. In the evening the fountain is saturated with vibrant white light.
